
Julie London (nee Peck) was an American actor and singer with a career that spanned 40 years. A torch-singer renowned for her smooth, sultry contralto singing, London recorded over thirty albums of pop and jazz standards between 1955 between 1955 and 1969. The album she released as her debut "Cry Me a River" was recorded by her, was inducted into The Grammy Hall of Fame in 2001. In addition to the note on the music, London was nominated for a Golden Globe Award in 1974 for her role as nurse Dixie McCall in the television series Emergency!. London was born in Santa Rosa to vaudevillian parents. Her acting career began acting as an actress as she worked as an elevator operator in downtown Los Angeles. London's career in acting lasted 35 years. It began in 1944 when she was cast in films. They included roles as the lead female role in numerous westerns. She also appeared with Rock Hudson in The Fat Man (1951), John Cassavetes and Robert Taylor in Saddle the Wind (1958), Gary Cooper in Man of the West (1958) as well as Robert Mitchum with The Wonderful Country (1959). In the middle of the 1950s she signed a recording agreement with Liberty Records. This was the beginning of her professional music career. She released her final studio album in 1969 but continued to have success as the female starring role of nurse Dixie McCall in the television series Emergency! (1972-1979) She starred with her husband Bobby Troup. Jack Webb, her ex-husband also produced the show.
